Not to minimize the distress, but hitting a snag would elicit that behavior in all our cats

It's situational behavior that isn't likely to be repeated outside that situation.
What you've describe is just what comes with having cats. If that doesn't fit within your household, I understand, but make sure if you surrender the animal you do so at a no-kill facility. It wouldn't be fair for the cat to face being euthanized just for being a cat.
