It's more of a prequel to BB. It takes place seven years before BB.

You won't get some of the references and the opening scene might not make much sense but otherwise I don't think you'd need to see BB to watch it.
The biggest question is, why haven't you watched BB? Has the praise not been big enough? ;-)
