Question about Boyhood: Is it a frontrunner because it's a great movie or is it a frontrunner because of its dedication to filmmaking?

I ask because, even though I loved it, ROTK really had no business winning BP, but the Academy seemed to treat it (LOTR as a whole) as a filmmaking marvel and rewarded them as such.

Honest question as I have not seen Boyhood.
