I suppose the language is different because in cricket, there's only one switch between offence and defence.

So one team goes out and scores runs, while the other pitches and fields, and the. It switches and the other team has to chase that total. If you can defend well, holding the other team to a low score, then it helps your chances immensely as they have no other opportunity to score.
It's not like baseball where the offence/defence switch happens seventeen times. If a team doesn't get a hit, they might in the Ned inning or the one after that.
