IIRC, probation is for misdemeanors, often in lou of jail, or with early release, Parole is when you are let out of prison for felony crimes

but a sentence can be XX months plus 5 years probation which can be supervised or not.
but if you were sentenced to 10 years, and you serve them, then you are let out, no parole, no supervision,
unfortunately this also means no halfway housing to help you ease back into normal life. one of the issues faced by those in SuperMax prisons, at least that do get out, is they are moved out of as near total isolation to out on the streets and many suffer mental breakdowns
