okay, perhaps a totally off the wall related to nothing question . . . is there an ancestry.com version for pedigree dogs?

I know that serious breeders and owners get their dogs (and maybe it's done for cats as well?) pedigree affiliations, like AKC (American kennel club) things . . . heck, when I was a kid, we had a couple of dogs, and they were AKC registered. I'm just wondering if organizations like AKC keep all of those records and to what extent does it work?
