In response to "LYC, I was looking at an old newspaper clipping my mom saved from years ago when my granddad was alive . . . cool story IM . . ." by call me Ishmael

we adopted an elderly woman as a childcare for my younger brother, housekeeper etc, became an ersatz grandma, told tales of growing up in a saloon...

a speakeasy her folks ran during prohibition, how it was fire bombed by rival gangs, she jumped out an upstairs window and slid down some drain pipe to get away, some didn't.

I never thought about this before, it just now accures to me, she was probably a lesbian, she and her best friend lived together for years, retired to florida when the bought a little house, right, from a salesman in ohio, from a brochure, which turned out to be a shack in a swamp full of bugs, they left and lost it when an alligator ate her little dog right in front of her.
