High end performance cars are often released with automatic transmissions first and then follow with a manual transmission option later and at a premium as the automatic transmissions have advanced to the point that the automatic is actually the most efficient / highest performance option. The automatic can shift faster and more efficiently than than the best drivers.

Technology wise, we're headed toward where having a steering wheel, i.e. manual driving is going to be an option ;-)
