I started to learn to drive on a standard. My mother was so worried I'd strip the gears she paid for lessons. I haven't driven a standard since.

I learned in a '58 Holden (Australian Chevy) with a stick shift on the steering column. In the '70s I drove a manual Corvair.

I was in the market for a used car when I was 20 or so, found a good deal on a VW, bought it and then had my ex teach me how to drive it.
