In 2015, Quentin and Maybin are almost exactly a wash for Upton. Kimbrel is only $9 million.

In 2016 and 2017, Upton and Kimbrel were scheduled to earn $56 million and Kimbrel gets another $13 million in 2018. So, all of that is off the books in return for Maybin at $17 million for 2015/2016. Now, the game becomes increasing Maybin's value enough to deal him before the team has to pay that.

They basically want to whitewash the books beyond 2015, save for Freeman. The scary thought is that our 65 win team comes with a price tag of $96 million. It may be less than a third of that by the end of the season, depending on what happens next.
