That's part of it, but these young people weren't molded the day they walked into university

They are a product of the society they grew up in.
And anyone 18-22 spent most of their formative years in a culture of 'be afraid' and 'the boogeyman can strike at any time'. I'm no psychologist but I have to think that is a contributory factor to this.
Certainly there are also studies about the 'everyone is a winner, everyone is special' mentality having a detrimental effect that is likely a separate contributing factor.
