While i mostly agree with that, it isn't the same thing.

It's on a channel people need to specifically request and it comes with an additional charge. Anybody saying that they're going to boycott advertisers of an HBO show would just be laughed at or ignored. It's different when the show is on a basic cable network that is provided to everyone with basic cable. And while I personally feel that the people and groups that threaten boycotts over tv content are for the most part a very small minority, advertisers might feel differently. They might still pull spots because of the threats rather than take the risk of people following through.
If it were up to me all the basic cable channels would be uncensored, at least in regard to language. If it turns out that such a thing lead to a loss of viewers (I would expect the opposite) then they could start going back towards censorship until they found the level that had the highest viewership. Since their major goal is profit, which is obtained in large part through maximizing viewership.
