Honestly, the books are "dense" in that a lot of stuff is going on and there are 8-10 viewpoint characters, but I never found it hard

And it'll be easier for you to follow than it was for me, if only because you determine the delay between finishing one book and beginning the next.
I read A Game of Thrones before A Storm of Swords was published, so I've had to wait on GRRM. Fortunately, I've found the books to be enjoyable rereads.
