The issue that I have with JJ is...

that he really likes to soap things up.

It's not enough for Ethan Hunt to have another Mission: Impossible. He has to get married so his new wife can get kidnapped and threatened.

It's not enough for the Star Trek crew to get together. Kirk has to have Daddy issues, Vulcan has to be destroyed, Spock has to lose his mother, Spock and Uhura have to have a relationship, Kirk's replacement father figure has to die, etc.

Sometimes this works (Star Trek) and sometimes it works less well (M:I 3 IMO, Star Trek 2). Maybe it'll work in Star Wars - which is certainly no stranger to these themes - but maybe he'll go over the top.
