Why do they need to? If (man/woman) parents divorce and both get remarried, are all four recognized as parents for the child?

I guess I don't get the "recognized" part. If the sperm is donated, and a man/woman have a child, is the donor recognized as a parent? Don't they give up those rights by donating?
