So it wouldn't apply to your divorce example or to an anonymous sperm donor. And it wouldn't apply to a non-anonymous sperm donor, unless the donees and the donor wanted it to, which I expect would be rare.
But assume a situation where three people agree that they want to be the parents of a child together (not necessarily all will have a biological connection, but they have all three agreed they want to be parents to the child together).
Laws currently would only allow for two people to be legally recognized as parents. So the third parent, for example, couldn't make medical decisions in an emergency, for instance, because that parent isn't recognized as a parent by the law.
