In ye olde daze, the concept of godparents was a real thing, if the adults of one family got killed off (plague, vendetta) it was already arranged

now we have more than half of the kids in any typical school are from non traditional 2 parent households, the his hers and ours, step parents and alt custody is just as much a norm.
and many states appoint a 3rd party adult to speak for a child in divorce proceedings
so the need is very much there for 3rd parent figure to be legally recognized.
