The book's length was fine - that's no biggie to me.

What I didn't like was the constant oppression. It was miserable to read about the kid's misery. Also, it really bothered me that he followed his dad's path. I totally get the nature/nurture theme, but it felt jarring and out of character.

I *hated* the Boris character.

The book left me cold. I'm great at suspending disbelief, but this was a case where I never could, and I think it's something in her writing that causes it.
