"I spent time in class going over how to write an Act Log. I shared a sample. I warned them about the hazards of online resources like SparkNotes. I told them I wanted to see what they understood and what they thought. Online resources are great for verification and clarification, but don't take the place of interpretation and analysis. I warned them that I'd catch them if they cheated and that it would suck for a 4th quarter 8th grader to get a referral for plagiarism. And yet the first one I read was copied verbatim! (I was able to cut it from my Drive and paste it into Google search and find an exact match.)"
