I think theres two reasons for this. 1. Religion can be a commitment many people are not willing to give. 2. Too many religions are too rigid.....

I know a number of people that are spiritual but not religious. They want the connection of faith and believing in something bigger than themselves, but not the way that many religions (notably Christian) are currently set up. They want an a la carte version and very few religions are set up that way.
This is not to say that one way is better than the other, but just a reflection as society changes.
