Your point while an excellent one is more specific to the US I think....In my University days there were lots of agnostics...

Now I did go to York which has not usually been supportive of religions (but very supportive of ethnicities) but I was very agnostic then and it did not seem to be an issue to anyone.

Early 90's is the timeframe.
