There's effects but most of it is erasing rather than imagery. Pretty much all of it starts as practical

But rather than old, old school like hang underneath a stagecoach and just rely on your skill / luck, Miller took advantage of modern technology and the fact that that he could erase harnesses and other safety rigging so he could allow the stunt performers to protect themselves and still get the shots he wanted.
I believe his philosophy is that the world of Mad Max started in ours so it is possible to build the stuff so why not build the stuff. The crashes are supposed to be rooted in our world so why not crash stuff.
