I should have added something about that above - use of trains for commercial transport purposes is still important.

we wouldn't want the actual tracks used for it gone, in most cases, at least.
now I want to know how much of amtrak costs are for maintenance of mixed-use tracks, and how much of the commercial use is subsidized.
