LYC: Abby's reaction to the news last night really, really surprised me.

this probably loses something in translation but......

We told her after dinner as planned. I was in my very straightforward mode and didn't really waver much as I was explaining how grandma had been sick for a really long time, was in the hospital over the weekend, etc. etc.

I can see she's not really getting where this all leading, so when I bottom lined it, she took it really hard. As we were expecting.

Lots of crying, consoling. We talked to her for a good long while. After this, Heather suggests we go for a walk, which proved to be a great idea. By the time we were walking, Abby was more composed. At the end of the walk, Heather was trying to sing Icona Pop's "I Love It" but as usual, she can only sing the 4-5 words that she knows over and over. Abby of course loves this.

We were getting ready for dessert, and I was sitting on the sofa. Abby, who by now had dealt with the news much better than I thought she would but is still a little shaken, comes over to me, puts her hand on my arm and says,

"Daddy, I'm sorry. I'm sorry about grandma"

At which point, I *lost* it.

She was always been a sweet and empathetic girl, but I was kind of shocked that she'd have the....insight? wherewithal? to offer sympathy in this case. That was such a wonderfully bittersweet little gesture
