I don't think he has been uninterested. he actually was as engaged as I have ever seen him quite a bit in recent years,

having more guests who seemed to genuinely interest him and not necessarily people who'd necessarily be on other late night shows. (except maybe craig ferguson or, like, charlie rose.) for any chat show, there will always be some going through the motions, with yet another actor or actress shilling a movie, etc.; but he had a whole lot of people with whom it was clear that he wasn't just doing that.
my biggest criticism of Dave in recent years was beating bits to the ground long after they would have been put out of their misery in the past. that stuff wasn't so compelling; but he still did pretty darned well with the rest, which is tough to do after so many years.
