they definitely dream, but it can be that sleep-movement can startle them awake and they get out of sorts.

my mom's miss molly (one of the recently r.i.p.'d kitties) also didn't like being in the dark as she got older. she'd wake up and sit and cry like that, but she wouldn't if a light was left on. little ol' lady who didn't want to be in the dark, aww.
another of mom's walks the halls and will cry because he's lonely when everyone else is sleeping. he needs a solo hobby. ;) -
