is it worth getting? is it really necessary? what sort of changes will it update?

my laptop runs on Windows 7, i think (I got the laptop back in the summer of 2011ish, and it's done fine for my needs) . . . i'm just wondering if it's really all that important that I'll want to get it. i read something this morning that said that it's free for those who already have Windows 7 or 8 (?)
