penny stocks are usually penny stocks for a reason. the only piece of advice I'd offer is know what you're investing in very well.

I've picked up a couple mining company stocks quite cheaply, and done ok on them, because I understand the industry a little. I wouldn't venture into tech startups though, because even if it sounds like a good idea to me, I just don't have a firm enough grounding in it.
