I think it was someone on ST who linked to the New Yorker article about Kalief Browder, the teenager held in Riker's for three years.

He could have just copped a plea and been out in months with time served. But he said he didn't do it and wanted his day in court. But because of the judicial backlog, he spent YEARS in jail before a judge finally ordered him released.

Yeah, he committed suicide.
