Yeah, much as I feel that scene went too far, what they did with Stannis here was kind of masterful. They made us like a guy who:

A) Killed his brother
B) Killed all kinds of people who didn't agree with his religious beliefs by burning them alive
C) Cut off Davos's fingers because he broke the letter of the law even if the result was beneficial
D) Would have killed his nephew if Davos hadn't spirited him away.

He's not a nice guy. They made us root for him, but last night was a grim reminder that we really never should have been.
