In response to "Edited! I googled, are your comps the same as this online definition: -- (edited)" by Andie

sort of . . . the Comprehensives in the program that i'm in basically is . . .

a test where we get 2 essay-style questions. they can cover basically anything in general that has been covered during the 2 years of the Master's Degree program, not necessarily a specific class (some things can potentially have materials that are covered in more than 1 class, or otherwise have broad issues to that effect) . . . and we don't get to know in advance exactly what the test will be over.

for what it's worth (in case you haven't seen / don't remember my posts from a few months ago about this), I took Comps back in March and didn't do well. well, several of us did not do well. So, i'll have company this week when I show up for the retake.

and, a couple of months ago, the dept. head told me that if a person doesn't pass the 2nd time, "well, you just take it again." this sort of flies in the face of things that have been whispered among students over the past couple of years. we have heard of rumors of where sometimes a person gets to do 'a project' instead of retaking the comps if they have extenuating circumstances. for example, i heard that one of the 2nd year students last year got pregnant towards the end of her program, and they gave her a big project to work on instead of having to worry over a test retake. and one of the girls in my group this year just got a job in D.C. and started there this past week. i found out 2nd-hand that she said something to the dept. head about a project, and got "a funny look" from the dept. head in response. and she has to retake the test in D.C. w/ a proctor. sucks to be her right now.

anyway, i'm rambling, but the point is that i said something to the dept. head recently and was told that sometimes, an "alternate" test sort of thing can be administered. so that's why i'm thinking that if i do badly the 2nd time, i'm going to ask for some sort of alternate option thing and see what happens. and i'm not completely joking when i talk about blaming the dyslexia. i've had some minor learning issues since childhood. i've just never tried to make a big issue of it until now, but now i'm thinking that i should have at some point and that I should ask for an alternate choice or option now.
