that's been my understanding, but I now see that may be because I grew up in the u.s. it looks like it's different in other places. (link)

I was thinking of Hemingway, too (I'd guess a lot of us make that connection!), with his service being at the tail end of the war, and "the sun also rises" which uses that term, set after the war.
