In other tech news, Major Nelson redesigned his site layout today. I don't like this trend in web design.

Obviously it was done for mobile, fair enough. But on desktop monitors it's a huge waste of space. Sure it's wide, but the font is huge so you only get to see two articles 'above the fold'. And they all gradient into each other so you have this vague mush.
CNN's recent (last year?) redesign is also way too spaced out. I want information delivery, dammit. Look at ST, it's great, chock full of text on one screen so I can see as much of the discussion as possible and decide where I want to click.
These new sites seem to be taking a dreamy atmosphere/lifestyle experience approach, like some restaurant or cafe with a nice photo of a coffee and croissant. "Don't worry about the specific menu items or prices, just come visit us and you'll find something you like." Give me data, dammit, not style.
