I don't understand with it being so close why they didn't just estimate it to beat Avengers for marketing/publicity purposes.

Even if the actuals wind up putting it behind The Avengers, all of the mainstream media box office reporting is based on the estimates. They could have gotten the media coverage of being the biggest opening of all time. None of the mainstream media would have reported on the update with actuals. The entertainment media would have, but that's a niche.
