Overestimating by $3M on a $200M opening would not even have been blinked at. The mainstream media would declare it the #1 opening ever on Monday.

They would never update themselves because they report box office on Monday based on estimates and then don't worry about it again. The entertainment media would have reported the actuals meant it didn't wind up the biggest opening of all time, but the news story that it was would be out there for the casual observers that it was. The percentage overestimation would be totally within reasonable industry standards.
