If this was during the summer season, I'd give it more credence. Xmas is a killer season for massive openings.

Hell, you have the capstone of a tremendously successful trilogy (LOTR) that didn't sniff 100mil opening. You have the incredibly technologically advanced follow-up to the largest movie ever that didn't get to 80mil.
It could happen. But to do so will mean it has to break both all guides of the box offices and decades of social actions (ie, become more important than getting ready for the holiday)
