GoT spoiler question/pondering

I understand fully that the men of the Knight's Watch felt super betrayed by Jon Snow and that's why they killed him. But question: Do we think the majority of the Knight's Watch really don't understand the depth of the threat of the White Walkers? Do they think thousands upon thousands of wights will never be able to scale the walls and so they'll be safe? It doesn't seem plausible that they just wouldn't give a shit. Will they turn the Wildlings away now (can they numbers-wise?) What do they think is going to happen with their numbers so few?
