It's also worth noting that some of what is written will end up in Book 7, so he isn't just writing the next book, but the next 2 books.

That was the issue with 4 and 5. He had so much that they could no physically bind the book into one volume, so he had to decide to tell all of some stories (which was what he chose) or some of all the stories.

So book 4 focused on Westeros and Book 5 focused on stuff outside Westeros. Then in the last 3/4's of book 5 the stories synch up again.
