some say its because people get a taste of highquality homebrew (much less 'heads') but don't want to bother DIY.
of course other wags say its because they get a taste of their neighbor's rot gut and decide to get some good stuff.
prohiibition against hobby distilling is stupid and only so the government can get the tax money, (here in WA its like 2/rds the cost at retail) and is no more 'dangerous' than cooking food.
I'm not talking about fast buck moonshining, hobbiest can actually produce a better quality than commerical distilleries who collect a wider ranger of distillate, (heads, hearts and tails)
every case you hear about poisonings have come from assholes either using a barrel found on the side the road (formerly used to store the toxic chems the assholes who dumped the barrel also dumped the contents somewhere) or they tried to distill methanol, (happens a lot in India). in Checz there was big case of poison going around killing a blinding. the idiots had been draining radiators of UN peaceeeeeekeeper trucks, who had been filled with an ethanol based coolant. but after wards they were refilled with local sourced old school methanol. that's the shit that kills and western autos don't use it anymore because cats will lick it up and die. )
