they're pretty robust. also, black bears are pretty non agressive....

they are all over the place out here in the catskills. they're worth keeping an eye on, but for the most part they're relatively harmless. in the 20th century there were only like 20 fatalities from black bears in the usa, and almost all of those came in remote areas where bears don't encounter people much.
