My sister just announced to the family that she and her live in boyfriend got married a couple of weeks ago.

They were already registered domestic partners under Illinois law (which allowed both M/F and same sex partners to register and which allowed the boyfriend to access her health benefits).

Apparently they got a notice in the mail saying that now that same sex marriage is legal in the state, all registered domestic partners have an option to convert their partnership to marriage within a certain grace period. If you miss the grace period and later want to convert, a new fee will be payable.

So basically, they went down to the county registry, stood in line, signed some papers and now, BAM--husband and wife.

So yeah, my sister is not super romantic about this kind of thing.
