I don't know what the ending is, but I know the twist: the Watcher is not the villain. His family has been watching the house for generations for a reason. It contains a great evil bound up through some kind of magical sacrifice (hence the constant references to "young blood"). However, at some point the magical wards will be broken and the evil will enter our world. The family will be in great jeopardy... until the Watcher comes to their aid and helps them drive the evil back from whence it came... at the cost of his life.
Obviously, the Watcher is a bit cracked (wouldn't you be after a lifetime watching one house, waiting for some semi-legendary evil to emerge, and not being able to tell anyone?), which helps with the misdirect.
