In response to "hometown poll: name an odd distinction yours might be renowned for (our kids have always done really well at the nat'l marbles tournament) -- nm" by jangles

Being virtually destroyed by a tornado isn't really an odd distinction anymore, so I'll say: the Heyl Pony Farm.


The Heyl Pony Farm was the top worldwide supplier of Shetland ponies in the 1920's. If George Heyl hadn't died suddenly and unexpectedly in the early 1930's, my hometown might still be on the map for Shetland ponies.

Also, during WWII, my hometown had the only canning facility in the country that supplied canned pumpkin for the military's K rations. At one time, the canning facility was staffed with a few dozen German POWs because they couldn't find enough workers locally.
