Dropbox has some specialness when it comes to this. The iphone doesn't really have a concept of local storage beyond the camera roll, so Dropbox has

to communicate directly with the apps that will be used to open the file (and those apps store the file in their own memory).

Look for an "open with ..." icon to try it out.
