While in agreement that the money in politics is too much, I don't think "what else it could have gone to" is really relevant. It comes from

individuals (and corporations) that weren't going to put that towards a "public good". It's being spent in the economy (travel, hotels, advertising, marketing, etc.) so it's generally a positive to the economy. I hate the way it buys influence and causes candidates to act get the money. But as to how else it could be spent, I don't spend a second worrying about that.
