Sure, but I think the point is that if they get drawn into the debate then who is actually more experienced becomes much less important than...

...the debate itself. It suddenly doesn't really matter who's more experienced, what matters is that that debate is happening between one side's #1 and the other side's #2, and the #1 in that scenario automatically is diminished simply by having that debate.
That's why they've got Biden out there saying he thinks Palin's qualified.
