food sharing query from Steve Hendrix
Are guys funny about their food? I've been talking to diners and restaurant servers around D.C. and several talk about the french fry effect, that moment when a wife/girlfriend/friend asks for a few fries (or worse, just goes for one) and the response is either "No" or a chilly stare. "I'd be glad to order you some fries of your own, but don't eat mine." Some waiters talked about the dessert version: She virtuously says no to dessert, then has the fork hovering over his. Same chilly stare. Or worse. "I've seen fights over that," a server at La Diplomate said. Is there a food sharing dynamic at your table?

Unless there's a shortage of fries on the plate (and there usually isn't), then what's the problem?

I frequently offer at least a part of something, and deciding to share happens; but the only time I'll ask for something is a single french fry.

No. I guess I would be if someone just reached across and ate something without asking or me offering, though. -- nm
