Two suggestions:

1. Make sure you're registering with the American embassies or consulates in your travels. See, e.g., ...

http://burma.usembassy.gov/

http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/

2. Also check the Traveler Information on for each of those consulates or embassies. Even a simple, innocent mistake can have drastic consequences.
