Far too often, if the crime is a little screwy, they assume its Bs...up here in WA a woman was raped, the cops didn't buy her story,...and well just

like you harrange someone into a false confession, they bullied the gal into retracting her claim, THEN charged and convicted her for false reporting, she spent jail time, then later a serial rapist confesses, DNA matches, maybe if they tokk her more seriously, or even got a 2nd opinion from another detective?
