I think they gave us some insight into how Adam became so bad; but that doesn't excuse it, it just shows some possible pitfalls of being immortal.
yes, he did hope for a way out; but he didn't have to hurt as many people as he did, didn't have to do anything to impact Henry without Henry's consent, etc. he freaking tortured people; and, as someone who had been tortured himself, that made it even worse. so much worse.
there were other, more positive choices he could have made; but he didn't.
